Spanish Curriculum
Kindergarten
The goal for the Spanish Program at this level is to
create a positive foreign language experience through physical,
visual and oral activities. Spanish classes will involve songs,
movement, drawings and coloring. Combining verbal and
kinesthetic together is very effective in the language learning
process. Children tend to remember the words and melody of a
song especially if hand and body motions are included in the
learning process. Meaning is conveyed without translation. This
engages children kinesthetically bringing the language into
their bodies. Music and song also help to reinforce
pronunciation and accents of the foreign language as well as
vocabulary and expression.
First Grade
The First Graders will follow a similar learning
approach as the Kindergartner (fun learning-lots of oral and
visual activities) with a stronger emphasis on continued short
dialogues and additional vocabulary. The focus for this group is
on speaking and listening skills as well as reading and writing
in Spanish. They will do guided writing that will consist of a
few words together. Their class will also involve: songs,
drawings, short dialogues, questions, movement, worksheets and
games. It is important to remember that language learners at
this age are able to comprehend though listening much more than
which they themselves are able to orally reproduce.
Second and Third Grade
The Second and Third Grader will learn Spanish with a
strong emphasis on speaking and listening as well as reading and
writing in the target language. This is one main difference in
the language curriculum at this age group. Some of the ways in
which students will learn Spanish will be through the use of:
short dialogues, skits, songs, movement, guided worksheets,
projects and games. Building upon previous language abilities is
imperative for success in truly internalizing a language.
Students at this age are enthusiastic about understanding and
appreciating a new culture and language.
Fourth Grade
The Fourth Grader will learn Spanish with a strong
emphasis on speaking and listening as well as more reading and
writing in the target language. Through different activities
this level of Spanish is taught with an emphasis on real life
situations. Students will learn through activities such as:
dialogues, skits, songs, movement, worksheets, vocabulary lists,
researching, projects, exams and games. Creating awareness of
other countries and their cultures as well as creating awareness
of the importance and opportunities of learning another language
are also a main focus in the curriculum.
Primary Plus’ foreign language curriculum is a foundation and prepares students for future language learning.
