First Grade Curriculum Summary
Reading/Spelling

Students understand the basic features of
reading. They become familiar with letter patterns and know how
to translate them into the spoken language by using phonics,
syllabication and word parts. Students draw conclusion from
their readings by responding to essential question, making
predictions and comparing information from several forms of
reading.
Language Art/Writing

Students write and speak with a command of
the standard English language appropriate to their grade level.
They learn to write and speak in complete coherent sentences.
They identify singular and plural nouns. They identify and
correctly use contractions in writing and speaking. Students
listen critically and respond appropriately by using proper
phrasing, descriptive words, pitch and modulation.
Mathematics
Mathematics-California Edition, McGraw Hill Publishers
Students begin to understand and use the concept of ones and
tens in the place value number system. They measure with units
and describe data and analyze and solve simple word problems.
Students identify common geometric figures, classify them by
common attributes and describe their relative position in space.
Finally, students solve mathematical problems and justify their
reasoning to explain and check the validity of the results.
Social Studies

Students continue to understand the broad concepts of rights
and responsibilities. They explore the varied background of
American citizens and learn about symbols, icons and songs that
reflect our common heritage.Students understand basic economic
concepts and the role of individual choices in a free market
economy. They locate on maps and globes their local community,
California, the United States, the seven continents and the four
oceans.
Science/Health
Science, Macmillan/McGraw Hill Publishers
Students compare and understand the properties of solids,
liquids and gases. They comprehend that plants and animals
inhabit different environments and have features that assist
them in thriving in different kids of places. Weather is
observed, measured and described through the use of common
tools. (thermometer, wind vanes, etc.) The Scientific Method is
used to understand scientific investigations. They are able to
describe discrepancies between two objects or phenomenon.
Enrichment Curriculum
- The visual arts curriculum – Students
apply artistic process and skills using a variety to media
to communicate meaning and intent in original works of art.
Students learn the principles of design.
- Our Music Curriculum – students read,
listen and describe music in terms of music terminology.
They compose, arrange and perform musical productions in a
developmentally appropriate range.
- Physical Education - Students
demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles and
strategies that apply to learning and performance of
physical activities. Students improve their health and
performance through physical activities.
- Spanish instruction is given to our
students on a weekly basis. General knowledge of the spoken
Language is presented along with an appreciation for other
cultures.
- Computers are used to supplement and
enhance our overall curriculum. Students learn, basic
keyboarding skills and develop an interest in technology
through projects using the computer.
- A sense of community is created through our “LifeSkills” curriculum. The five “Lifelong Guidelines” provide consistent parameters and expectations of conduct not only in our classroom, but in our world.
- The development of skills in First Grade
is reflected in the year’s collection of: Progress Reports,
Weekly folders and Report Cards provided to parents
throughout the First Grade year.
